Bitcoin halving is an event that occurs approximately every 4 years or every 210,000 blocks, in which the reward miners receive for adding a block to the Bitcoin blockchain is halved. This event is programmed into the Bitcoin code and is intended to control inflation and ensure that the total number of bitcoins never exceeds 21 million.
Halving is important because it slows the rate of issuance of new bitcoins, which can generate upward pressure on its price due to limited supply. This event also reinforces bitcoin monetary policy by making the cryptocurrency deflationary in the long run.
The next Bitcoin halving is expected in April 2028, at which time the reward will be reduced to 1.5625 BTC. The last Bitcoin halving occurred on April 19, 2024. The 2024 halving reduced the per-block reward from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC.
